Suckled calf averages jump at Carlisle

A strong show of suckled calves, many with show potential sold to an eager ringside at Carlisle on Saturday, with the overall average rising more than £190 on last year.

The top call of the day of £3500 was paid for a Limousin steer from Robert and Michael Scott, Thirlwall Castle.  This steer was by Cloughhead Titanic and out of a Limousin x cow and was purchased by Gavin Scott, Gateside Farm, Linlithgow.  

The Scotts also had the next top call at £2800 this time with a red Limousin heifer by Hafodlas Vance.  She was purchased by Gordon Park, Henmoss.  The overall champion from the pre-sale show achieved the day's third top price at £2600. This was a black Limousin heifer from Philip and John Trafford, Bassenthwaite. Sired by the herd's stock bull Sablier and out of a ⅞ British Blue cross dam, she sold to Mike Rowland, judge for the pre-sale show.

Breaking the £2000 barrier again were three excellent black Limousin heifers from Thirlwall Castle by a home bred bull. The sold at £2500 and £2100 (twice) and were bought by Gavin Scott, Gateside, K D and D E Millar and Partners, Crookholm, Canonbie and T C Edwards, Corwen, respectively.

Also at £2100 was the first prize British Blue heifer from Andy Ryder, Blackhamilton Farm, she was purchased by Willie Timm, The Reddings, Strathaven.

The last to hit the £2000 mark was another Thirlwall Castle heifer which was purchased by Trevor Lyon, Lintre House, Thurlby.

Show calves to £3300 at Stirling

Show potential calves sold to a peak of £3300 at Caledonian Marts, Stirling, on Friday, with the top price paid for the reserve champion autumn born calf from Monzie Farms. This one, a 510kg steer was knocked down to Aileen Ritchie, Tamala, Aberdeen.CMcalves11monzie (Autumn born Res Champion).jpgNext best at £2400 was the reserve overall champion and heifer champion, a Limousin cross heifer, again from Monzie Farms. This one tipped the scales at 270kg and had been reserve spring calf champion before taking the reserve overall title. She sold to Paul Barwood and Anita Padfield, Norfolk.CMcalves41monzie (Overall Res Champion).jpgFollowing that came a £2100 bid for a Limousin heifer from J Robertson, Newton of Logierait. This 350kg calf was knocked down to Les Wilson, Nottingham.

The pre-sale champion then came close behind when selling at £2000. This 200kg Charolais cross heifer also came from Mr Robertson and was bought by Cumbrian showman Neil Slack, Penrith. And a 440kg Limousin steer from the same home then took the same money when selling to June Dowie, Girvan. He had been the day's autumn born calf champion.

A third £2000 sale was achieved when D Henderson, Auchenrivoch, Kilsyth, sold a 440kg Charolais cross calf to D Blair, Littleinch, Wormit, Fife. (Caledonian Marts).


Thainstone Spectacular hits £4200 top

Wednesday's Thainstone Spectacular Show saw a top price of £4200 paid for the junior heifer champion, an April-born 244kg Limousin cross from Andrew Anderson, Smallburn Farms, Plewlands, Duffus, Elgin. She sold to Donald Morrison, Kinlochbervie.spectacular top £4200.jpgSelling at £3800 was the steer and overall champion from the pre-sale show, 429kg Limousin cross Mud Wrestler from the Wilson family, Wester Cairnglass, Ardersier, Inverness. This one has been supreme at Turriff show earlier in the summer and sold to Aileen Ritchie, Tamala, Whitecairns.mud wrestler 3800.jpgAt the same money was the junior champion and best junior steer Roanan, a March-born 298kg Limousin cross from George Macarthur and his sons David and Neil, Mid Fleenas. He went to Michael Alford, Somerset.

And also at £3800 was the reserve senior heifer champion, a year-old Limousin cross Dee-lite from father and son George and Don Anderson, Brucewells, Netherley, Stonehaven,  which had been champion at Echt, overall champion at Tarland and reserve cross cattle champion at Turriff. It sold for Elfed Williams, Sennybridge, Brecon.

Selling at £2800 was the reserve senior steer, a 426kg October 2010-born Limousin cross from Andrew Anderson. This went to Vicky Bowring, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

In at £2300 was the reserve overall and heifer champion Flaming Nora, a 500kg Limousin cross from James and Mark Munro, Invercharron, Ardgay. This one was knocked down to Paul Barwood and Anita Padfield, Grange Farm, Fleggburgh, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Averages; 43 heifers £1624.65, 47 steers £1314.04 (Aberdeen and Northern Marts).


Commercials were out in force at Enniskillen which brings the curtain down on a busy season of summer shows for Ulster's livestock exhibitors.
 
Clinching her first supreme championship of the season was the daughter of Black N Blue Diesel the January born "Bootylicious" from the Jalex team of James Alexander.

Clive Hoey secured the reserve championship with his home bred heifer "Poser". Sired by his Charolais stockbull Brutus this smart young heifer is out of a 7/8 Limousin cow.
"Poser" was also runner up in the Fermanagh Breeders Championships.
 
Overall winner of the Fermanagh Breeders section was Alan Veitch, Lisbellaw with his Ross Willie sired black steer which he has recently acquired a share in. This well made bullock was bred bt James Alexander, Randalstown. He then went on to take the male championship in the commercial rings.
 
The final two qualifiers for the Ulster Bank Breeding Heifer Championships were also tapped out at Enniskillen. These were presented by Finnegan Livestock, Dungannon and Jack Smyth, Strabane.
 

 

1972011 RWS Baby Beef Champ web.JPGTaking home the title of baby beef champion, was a heifer from M LL Howatson and Son, Ty Newydd, Denbigh.

 

Minnie M is by a Limousin and out of a Limousin cross British Blue. This was the first major show for the heifer, having been placed second and third in two local shows.

 

Weighing 422kg, she is one of 130 sucklers farmed by the Howatsons and was shown in the ring by Glyn Howatson. Her next outing will be at the Limousin Society's 40th anniversary show at Carlisle.

 

In reserve was Take a Chance on Me, a heifer from I Tudor Edwards, Bronddwyryd, Corwen. This one is by a Limousin and out of a Limousin cross British Blue.

 

Overall commercial beef champion went to the senior commercial champion, Black Beauty.

 

 

1972011 RWS Comm Champ web.JPGWeighing in at 518kg, this homebred heifer was put forward by Tecwyn Jones, Ty Newydd, Llanrwst, and shown in the ring by Gerwyn Jones.

 

She had been placed first in her class at the Shropshire Show earlier in the year and will be heading to the National Limousin Show at Carlisle next weekend. This one is by a Limousin sire and out of a British Blue cross dam. She is one of 40 cows owned by the family including 30 pedigree Welsh Blacks and 10 commercials.

 

For his reserve spot, judge Mr C J Hutchings bought the reserve senior commercial champion, Look at Me from Robin and Leri Roberts, Mathafarn Bach, Llangefni, into the ring. This heifer was put up against the baby beef champion. However, he eventually favoured the younger beast, Minnie M.

Taking the top ticket in the commercial beef classes here at Royal Norfolk was the Lyon family with their Limousin cross heifer Cher. This 505kg beast is by Burnbank Bullet and was bought from last year's Welsh Winter Fair as a suckled calf for £1200. She is out of an Aberdeen-Angus cross dam and may now head for the Great Yorkshire.2962011 RN Commercial.JPG

Reserve overall was Phil and Sharon Sellers' Limousin cross heifer Scarlet. Bred by Wendy Morgan she was also bought from the Welsh Winter Fair and tipped the scales here at 520kg. She had stood second in the class to Cher and followed her through to be reserve overall. She is being targetted at the winter season.

DJ tops the charts at Lurgan 2011

Lurgan champ.jpgA Charolais steer 'DJ' topped the charts at this year's Lurgan Agricultural Show, reigning supreme in the commercial rings.

 

'DJ' was sired by the son of Doonally New, and is from Nigel and Sandra Cochrane, Portadown.

 

 

Lurgan reserve.jpgTaking reserve, was Limousin steer 'Super Trooper', by Shire Apollo, from James Alexander and Robert Simpson. 

In the commercial cattle classes at Devon County it was a one-two for Mike and Melanie Alford, with their heifer Alijandro which is by a British Blue x Limousin sire. This one has previously been champion at Agri-Expo and last winter's Royal Highland Winter Fair.

Reserve spot went to the Alfords Galloway steer Super Mario which was purebred champion at the Royal Highland Winter Fair as well as Native champion at the East of England Winter Stock Festival last year.

I'm afraid there are no photos of these two as these classes were judged on Saturday after Taking Stock had left the show

In the dairy lines it was a Holstein heifer forward from Ann Holdcroft and Sons, Burton on Trent that secured the dairy interbreed title. This one, Dovetrent Prom Sandra, out of Dovetrent Gibson Sandra, who also did a lot of winning in her time, is a first calver and is due in October.

Sandra is no stranger to the show ring having won champion calf at Staffordshire County Show and Derby. She is due to be shown at Staffordshire, Lincoln and Bakewell as well as other local shows later in the season.

 

In reserve was the Jersey cow Saxown Connections Heidi 7 owned by 14 year old Tom Saxby of Skipton. This Fourth Calver yields about 28kgs a day and came second place two years ago at the same show. This one by Gyprat Belles Connection and out of Saxown Major Leagues Heidi 2 will likely be shown at the Great Yorkshire Show next month.

Commenting on his champion judge Nick Dain, Norfolk said for a young Holstein this one was as good as it gets. "This one's udders were as sweet as a whistle, walks so well and had plenty of style and presence in the ring. She was difficult to fault."

Cumbrian YFC calf champion makes £1260

Harrison and Hetherington conducted the sale of calves to conclude the Cumbria Young Farmers Clubs Interclub Suckled Calf Wintering Competition, where all the proceeds were donated to the Great North Air Ambulance.

The 12 calves had been purchased during the autumn calf sales in 2010 in auction markets operated by Harrison and Hetherington who financed the purchase of the calves. 

All the calves were halter lead and extremely well presented to the master judge Steadman Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby, Penrith.  He awarded the rosette for the best animal in the show to Kirklinton YFC with a superb British Blue cross heifer.Email YFC champ.jpgThe reserve champion was presented to Brampton YFC with an 11 month old British Blue cross steer.  

The main objective of the competition was to make the greatest margin possible between purchase and sale price and this achieved by Kirklinton YFC with their 13 month old British Blue heifer selling for £1260 leaving a margin of £530. 

This was closely followed by Penrith YFC with their 15 month old British Blue heifer making £1140 leaving a margin of £515.  Penrith YFC were also awarded the special rosette for the Best Turned Out Animal and Handler.

Caledonian Marts show calves to £3200

Top price in the show and sale of show-potential calves at Caledonian Mart on Saturday was £3200 paid by Nigel and Liz Bunkum, Tregarrick, Cornwall, for the champion, Bonnie Wee Jeanie.
cale calves champ april 2011 blog.jpgThis 11-month-old 395kg Limousin cross heifer, by Silex, sire of last year's Smithfield champion, and out of a Limousin x British Blue cow sired by Ronick Hawk, was bred by Hugh and Lyn Dunlop, of Holehouse, Ochiltree.

Thomas Laird, Sunnyside, Cumnock, received £2000 for Hot Cheeks, placed second in the heavyweight heifers and brought out by his daughter, Shona Stevenson.
Hot Cheeks, an 18-month-old 530kg Limousin cross, is by Hudscales Argonaut and out of a British Blue cross.

Father and son Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, were reserve with Allanfauld Fizz, one of 12 they had entered in the show.

Fizz, a 395kg 11-month-old pure Charolais heifer, is by Elgin Davinci and out of Allanfauld Caroline, an Allanfauld Van Gogh daughter. She sold to the judge Donald MacPherson for £1700.

Best in the Young Farmers' cattle was £2000 for the reserve champion, Miss Dynamite, an 11-month-old 415kg (914lb) Limousin cross heifer, by Allanfauld Cracker, from Carrick YFC member Jennifer Hyslop, Barhill, Girvan.
 
This one had previously been reserve baby beef champion at Agri-Expo, Carlisle and sold to Alan Turnbull, of Meadowend, Clackmannan.
 
The champion was Limited Edition, a 515kg Limousin cross bullock from Stirling YFC member Graeme Stirling, 29, of Burnbank Farm, Throsk. Limited Edition, by Tweedside Upstanding and out of a British Blue cross cow, sold to Gareth Scott, of Little Ittington, Saltcoats, for £1600.

Averages; Open sale, 14 bullocks £1057, 17 heifers £1227. Young Farmers, 15 bullocks £969, 20 heifers £947 (Caledonian Marts).


Carlisle suckled calves sell to £3750 top

Saturday's sale of suckled calves at Carlisle saw a number of showmen out looking for calves for the summer circuit with a high of £3750 paid for the reserve heifer champion from A and M J Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm. This Limousin cross sold to Michael and Melanie Alford, Cullompton.

Then making £3000 was the heifer champion, a Limousin cross from Martin Archer, Carry House. She was knocked down to Ian Goldie, Annan. Then at £2750 was the reserve champion steer, a Limousin cross forward from A J and F M Harrison, Grange Hall, which went to L Bamforth and Sons, Halifax.

Selling for £2700 was a Limousin cross heifer from John Smith-Jackson, Hightown, which was knocked down to Drew Hyslop, Barrhill. After that at £2550 was a British Blue cross heifer from I Powley, Greenmarsh, which was sold in a two-way split to R D Anderson, The Springs and J B and J a Fenwick, Eastholme.

Taking a £2500 bid was the steer champion, a Limousin cross from the Traffords. This one was sold to A and A Paul and Son, Greigland, Johnstone Bridge.

A British Blue cross heifer from K D and D E Millar and Partners then sold at £2150, with this one going to the Richardsons, Ghyll House, Appleby. And close behind at £2000 was another Limousin cross heifer from Martin Archer. This one sold to E Telfer and Son, Newton High House, Stocksfield.

Below the £2000 mark was an £1850 bid for another from Martin Archer, this unhaltered Limousin cross heifer was sold to E A Pritchard, Longtown, Hereford. Then came an £1800 sale for another from John Smith-Jackson. This Limousin cross sold to Kevin Ludgate, Milton Keynes.

At the same money was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, and purchased by Michael and Melanie Alford. Following that at £1750 was the first prize unhaltered Limousin cross steer from the Traffords, he went to R J Wilkinson, Fleetgrove Farm, Carlay.

Alexanders' crossbred heifers sell to average £1775

James and Nelson Alexander's sale of 100 in calf heifers at Ballymena last week drew a capacity crowd, with the sale topping at £2750.

Hitting the headlines at £2750 was a Charolais heifer sired by Tullygarley Alibaba out of a British Blue x Simmental cow. She sold in calf to Middledale Allrounder.

Buyer here was Derek Johnston who travelled from Newry to attend. Mr Johnston purchased the largest number of lots at the Jalex sale which earned him 1t of Corby Rock meal in addition to a number of straws of Black N Blue Diesel.

There were a number of lots that crossed the £2000 mark, with the sale achieving a 100% clearance and an average of £1775.

Export buyers also made their presence felt with a number selling to the south of Ireland, in addition to a consignment purchased by Neil Barclay, Harestone Farms Aberdeenshire.

The Richardson family of Ghyll House once again had complete domination of last Sunday's  show and sale of show potential cattle at Penrith, taking all four championship spots, under the father and daughter judging team of Elgin and Emily Jones, and the top 13 prices too.

Taking the sale's top call of £6000 was Just4Play the reserve female champion from the Richardsons. This is a May 2010-born Limousin cross heifer and sold in a two way split to Neil Slack and Julie Sedgewick.

This one, again a Limousin cross was knocked down to J Walton.fem and overall champ.jpgAfter that at £4000 was the male and reserve overall champion The Real Deal, once again from the Richardsons. Sired by a Limousin bull again, he was again knocked down to the big spending Slack and Sedgewick partnership.male and res overall.jpgCollecting a £3200 call was yet another from the Richardsons, a second prize winning British Blue cross heifer from the same class as the overall champion. This was Little Hooker which sold to Mr Morrison.

Then making £3000 was the reserve male champion, Ed Banger, once again from the Ghyll House entry. This one, the second place bullock from the same class as the male champion is a Limousin cross steer which was taken home by the Rice family.res male champ.jpgThe fourth prize heifer from the overall champion's class then sold at £2500. Again bred by the Richardsons, this British Blue cross heifer, Stocking Filler, was knocked down to Mr Wilkinson.

And a £2000 bid secured the third top priced steer of the night, The Package, a British Blue sired bullock, once again bred at Ghyll House. This one was snapped up by Allan Hall.

Selling at £1900 was the Limousin cross heifer Triple Threat. Following the run of prices achieved by its herd mates, this one again from the Richardsons was bought by Phil and Sharon Sellers, Lincolnshire.

Close behind that and making £1800 was Pistol Packin Mamma, the second prize heifer from the class won by the top priced lot. Sired by a British Blue and also bred by the Richardsons she sold to Mr Lumgair.

A Limousin cross steer bearing the name Pocket Rocket then collected the next best call of £1700. Also hailing from the Ghyll House team this one sold to Trevor Lyon.

Leyburn spring spectacular calves sell to £3500

Saturday's Spring Spectacular sale of show potential calves at Leyburn saw John Smith-Jackson, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, take the top two tickets and with them the top two prices as well.

Leading the sale was the heifer and overall champion, a Limousin cross, Red Velvet, from Mr Smith-Jackson, when she sold for £3500 to Phil and Sharon Sellers, Lincolnshire.Leyburn Champ.jpg
Second best was the reserve overal and steer champion, another Limousin cross, Rebus, from Mr Smith-Jackson. She sold to B J Waind, Malton, North Yorkshire.Leyburn 2,100.jpgGarrowby Estates took £1660 for the reserve champion steer which sold to D Scarborough, Grantham and Bill and Maureen Orme then sold a British Blue heifer at £1500 to Alan Peck, Norfolk. Will and Gillian Sedgeley, Garsdale, took £1280 for a British Blue cross steer. At £1200 was a Limousin steer from Garrowby Estates, with a Limousin heifer from Stephen and Richard Priestley, Bradford, making £1000.

Skipton show potential calves to £1200

Second top price in last week's show and sale of cattle with show potential at Skipton was an £1150 bid for the pre-sale show champion from J C Walker and Son, Clitheroe.

This was a British Blue cross heifer by the herd's stock bull Brennand Viper, out of a Charolais cross cow. She was snapped up by Steven Swales, Melbourne, York.

The Walkers' first prize Limousin-sired steer secured top price in show at £1200 when bought by, Michael Priestley, Clayton.
 
Selling at £1020 was the reserve overall, a ten-month-old Limousin-sired heifer, out of a British Blue, from the same home. She was bought by Phillip Summers, Clayton, Bradford,.
 
 David and Lisa Broadbent exhibited the first and second prize youngsters in the halter-led British Blue-sired heifer and steer classes. Stephen Swales bought both class winners - the heifer at £1060 and the bullock at £1000.

Average; steers 685.32, heifers £643.58, young bulls 697.99 (Craven Cattle Marts).
 

Middleton In Teesdale stores to £3400

A top call of £3400 was achieved yesterday at Middleton-In-Teesdale's show and sale of store cattle, with the top call going to the pre-sale champion, a Limousin cross heifer from J C and J White, Riggs Farm. This one sold to the judge Matt Morris, Leicestershire.Mid Feb Champ calf MIT.jpgSecond best at £2000 was the steer champion and reserve overall champion, again a Limousin cross and again from the Whites. This one also headed home with the judge.

Then making £1750 was the third placed steer which was also from the Whites and which sold to R D Anderson. The reserve champion heifer from B R Lawson and Son, Buddle House, sold at £1050 to P Tindale.

Overall the 638 cattle sold levelled the day at £665 (Harrison and Hetherington).
