Lincoln Reds sell to 4,500gns at Newark

The ongoing demand for quality cattle enjoyed by the Lincoln Red breed was much in evidence at Saturday's breed society sale at Newark, with bulls selling to a top of 4,500gns and females much sought after and reaching a peak of 3,000gns.

 

Leading the day's prices was July 2009-born bull Grovehouse Martin from P Stennett, Doncaster. Sired by St Fort Essex, Martin is out of Fenton Elegant E84, an Anwick Utopia daughter which stood reserve breed champion at the Royal in 2004. He sold to R G Parkinson and Sons, Louth.

 

Next best in the bulls was a 2,800gns call for Beverley Nimrod from R I Clough and Son. This one is a son of St Fort Dickens and out of Beverley Annie E30, a Beandon Uranus daughter. Nimrod, reserve male champion and junior native interbreed champion from this year's Lincolnshire Show sold to N T Morgan, Dover.

 

And selling at 2,500gns was the next lot in the ring Market Stainton Nelson from Robert and John Needham. Sired by Hemingby Bevan, he is out of Market Stainton Holly 6, a Fenton Challenger daughter and was knocked down to N and G Bark, Lanark.

 

Top call of the day in the females was a 3,000gns bid for long-distance entry Auchmahoy Grace M45 from S Buchan, Ellon, Aberdeenshire. This St Fort Jonathan daughter is out of Donnington Grace H5, a Donnington Email daughter and sold in-calf to homebred sire Auchmachoy Langworth. She found a new home with Peter Bush, Norwich.

 

A trio then sold at 2,000gns, with the first being Harrington Libby L189, an April 2008-born cow from the Timbury family. Sired by Manor Frank she sold to G H Robinson, Houghton on the Hill. Second at this money was maiden heifer Walmer Lass N33 from Hedley Needler. This April 2010-born heifer is by Beverley Jaunty and out of Walmer Lass H66. She found a new home with the buyer of the top priced female, Peter Bush, Norwich.

 

The final transaction at this price came when the Farmer family, Nuneaton, sold their August 2008-born cow Drayton Lisa L1. She is a daughter of Harrington Charlie and is out of Farnsfield Queen 102. Selling with her Limousin cross heifer calf at foot and back in calf again to a Limousin she headed home with Tom Green, Grantham.

 

Averages; bulls £2856, cows £1,653.75, in-calf heifers £1775.74, maiden heifers £1084.57 ( Newark Livestock Sales).

 

Lincoln Reds sell to 5100gns on strong Newark trade

Lincoln Red bulls sold to a high of 5100gns at Newark on Saturday on a trade which saw another two trade at 5000gns and females sell to 2100gns twice.

Taking the day's best call under the gavel of Paul Gentry was Hemingby Elliot from Michael Read. This Market Stainton Goodman son is out of Hemingby Bridget and is a June 2009-born bull with a beef value of +32. He was bought by F and B Hullagh and Son.TS mar 11 Lincoln Red Lot 12.jpgFirst of two to sell at 5000gns was Beverley Mandate from R I Clough and Son. Sired by Market Stainton Governor, this March 2009-born bull is out of Beverley Ella, a Hemingby Saracen daughter and has a beef value of +38. This one was snapped up by Sutton Estates.TS mar 11 Lincoln Red Lot 6.jpgThe other to make this price was Market Stainton Merrymaker from Robert Needham and Son. This one, sired by Hemingby Bevan is out of Market Stainton Eva 4, a Fenton Challenger daughter. He was reserve breed champion at Woodhall Spa show last year and was knocked down to P E A Wood.TS mar 11 Lincoln Red Lot 7.jpgA pair shared the next top call of 4200gns too, with the first at this price being Walmer Magee from H M and J M Needler. This one, a son of Beverley Henchman and out of Walmer Bianca, a Walmer Prince daughter, was bought by H W Martin Farms.

Then at 4200gns was the champion from the pre-sale show, Market Stainton Matador, again from the Needhams. He is another Hemingby Bevan son and is out of Market Stainton Dot 7, a Hemingby Rhodes daughter. This one was sold to Nottingham Consultants, Nottingham.TS mar 11 Lincoln Red Lot 9.jpgBest in the females on offer was the female champion from the pre-sale show Hemingby Bridget from Michael Read. This is a St Fort Essex daughter out of an Anwick Chancellor daughter and has a beef value of +27. She went home with R and I Mee.TS mar 11 Lincoln Red Lot 117.jpg

Also taking this price and selling to the same new home was in-calf heifer from Michael Read, Hemingby Mattie. This February 2009-born heifer is by Market Stainton Goodman and out of Hemingby Mattie, an Anwick Chancellor daughter. She sold in-calf to the breed record holder Walmer Legend and is due in August.

Then selling at 2000gns was another in-calf heifer from the Hemingby herd, Hemingby Polly. She is a St Fort Essex daughter and is out of an Anwick Chancellor daughter. Once again in-calf to Walmer Legend, she is due in August too and also sold to Messrs Mee.

Making 1750gns was Wragby Gift from G W Bolton. Sired by Anwick Fortune she is out of Wragby Gift, a Thorndale David daughter and sold to J L Bolton.

Averages; 12 bulls £3482.49, 15 in-calf heifers £993.99, 69 maiden heifers £866.77, eight cows and calves £1056.56 (Newark Livestock Market).
