Bull shot nets FW photo comp “winner of winners” accolade

Katy Gambles from Waddington in Lincolnshire has scooped the “winner of winners” slot in the Farmers Weekly Photography Competition 2015.
Katy beat stiff competition from the seven other category winners, having taken first place in the “livestock” section with this shot of a young British Blonde bull.
“I grew up on a farm, which has been in the family for four generations,” says Katy. “Although I’m a nurse and I enjoy my job, my real love and passion is to be on the farm – that’s when I’m at my happiest.
“I like this picture because of how well the detail stands out. It was a cold, frosty day and the sun was shining on to the bull, providing warmth and relaxation,” says Katy.
She used a Nikon D7000, with an f/5.3 setting, an exposure time of 1/1000 and an ISO of 400.
“Taking photos of livestock can be tricky, but patience is always rewarded,” adds Katy, who modestly attributes some of her best picture success to “pure luck”.
Her tips include always having a camera handy so you never miss an opportunity; considering the photo as a whole (for example, if there’s a beautiful view or interesting object, try to incorporate it); and brightening an image if need be using computer software.
