Badger culling is just one vital tool in the battle to eradicate bovine tuberculosis, Defra chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens has warned. “What is certain is that cattle-to-cattle transmission [of bovine TB] is crucially important – but so too is badger to cattle transmission,” said Mr Gibbens. “If we don’t deal with both then we won’t eradicate the disease.” Bovine TB was a complex disease. Better and more sensitive methods of testing cattle for the disease were needed, said Mr Gibbens.
