Longhorn cattle sell to 3,000gns at Worcester

Longhorn cattle were in demand at two fixtures last weekend (26 September) when the breed sold at Worcester and Chelford.

The society’s autumn show and sale at Worcester saw a catalogued entry of 106 sell to a top of 3,000gns for Wellhead Orton Lad, a 16-month-old bull by Raincliffe Harry out of a homebred cow from Nicky Luckett’s Cumbria based herd. This one went home with A Ferguson, Stenning West Sussex.

Auctioneers McCartney’s described trade for bulls as ‘selective’. Next in the money was the 20 month old bull Rhyfel Orion, from Andrew Williams, which realised 2,600gns when selling to John Mellin, Skipton, North Yorks.

The 2015 National Show supreme champion from Bernard Llewellyn, Mid Wales, was next in the money with a 2,450gns bid for Carreg Oak. He was snapped up by James Winnington, Derby.

Females enjoyed a brisk demand with quality being the important factor. Top price went to Eileen Hallifield’s pre-show female champion, Dunstall Jackpot, a six year old cow with heifer calf selling to David Howden’s Buckinghamshire based herd at 2,800gns.
