Multi-society sale at Worcester tops at 2,000gns

Belted Galloway cattle led trade at a multi-society show and sale at Worcester Livestock Market on Saturday (13 August), on a day when all cattle classes levelled at four figures.
Two-year-old Belted Galloway bull Shelsleys Jericho from David and Deborah Powell, Beauchamp, Worcestershire, sold for the day’s top price of 2,000gns in the Belted Galloway Society’s Southern show and sale.
By Southfield Super Star, Shelseys Jericho went to Mr J Blackett, Ulverston, Cumbria.
Meanwhile, females sold to a high of 1,620gns, with Whitepool Pollyanna taking the top price. The five-year-old cow from Matthew Stoker, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, sold with bull calf at foot, went to P Ford, Dorchester, Dorset.
Mr Stoker also had show success with home-bred maiden heifer, Matsway Moonlight 2, which took the overall reserve title.
She sold for 1,200gns to E Duggleby, Driffield, Yorkshire, who also bought Saltway Meriel with heifer calf at foot from Dr H O’Conor, for 1,000gns.
Zwartbles
Meanwhile, Zwartbles sold to a high of 800gns in the Zwartbles Sheep Association’s show and sale.
Top price went on a shearling ram from Messrs Holman and Mudgridge’s Hatches flock, Devon, which was knocked down to Mrs M Cornish, Buckfastleigh, Devon.
She also took home a ram lamb from M and S Preston, Bingley, West Yorkshire, for 600gns, and two ewe lambs – one for 570gns from Holman and Mugridge and the other for 400gns from SJ Inns, Banbury, Oxfordshire.
Ewe lambs were also in high demand, selling to a top price of 620gns for a lamb from Holman and Mudgridge’s Hatches flock, which was knocked down to R Heigh, Lancaster.
Shearling ewes and ram lambs followed closely, with both sections peaking at 500gns.
Oxford Downs
Top price in the Oxford Down Sheep Association’s show and sale went on a ewe lamb from Michael Hackling, Worcester.
The female and reserve champion in the preceding show went to JM and CE Mitchell, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, for 380gns.
The Mitchells took home further eight females, including another ewe lamb from the Mr Hackling’s Redhill flock for 210gns.
Shearling ewes meanwhile sold to 240gns for the reserve female champion from ML, GE and R Vincent, Witney, Oxfordshire.
In the shearling ram section, the reserve male champion from Geoff Watson’s Sulgrave flock led prices, going to J Black, Calvenhall, Shropshire, for 350gns.
