UK LIVESTOCK producers are still at as great a risk as ever from foot-and-mouth disease, despite the EU systems in place to monitor movement of stock throughout the Community.
Visitors to the animal health centre at the Royal Show were advised to be extra vigilant when they intended to import stock into the country.
"Beware illegal trade and false certification," said an Institute of Animal Health researcher.
He pointed to outbreaks of foot-and-mouth in Greece and Italy over the past two years and an existing outbreak in Moscow. "With stock moving from east to west in Europe the dangers are all too apparent," he said.
International trade excluded the movement of animals with antibodies to foot-and-mouth because they could be infected with virus and carry the disease.
