Apply foliar nitrogen to OSR soon

Growers planning to use late foliar nitrogen on their oilseed rape crops should make their applications as soon as possible, advised Sarah Clarke of ADAS at the firm’s Boxworth open day.
End of flowering is the optimum time for applying 40kg N/ha, she said, in order to see a 0.47t/ha yield benefit.
“There is a slight decrease in oil concentration from late nitrogen,” she cautioned. “So taking this into account, the gross yield benefit is 0.2t/ha.”
The practicalities of late passes have to be weighed up, she admitted. “And don’t put on more than 40kg. You can get scorching, which is always worse on hot days, and the advice is to avoid applications when it is above 18C.”
