Schmallenberg discovered in two new UK counties

The Schmallenberg virus has been discovered in two further UK counties as new cases of the disease continue to emerge.

Greater London and Warwickshire are the latest counties to be included in the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency statistics.

The total number of farms now reporting cases has risen to 176, an increase of 18 farms during the five-day period ending Friday 16 March.

Sheep farms continue to be hit hardest, accounting for 164 of the total farms. The remaining 12 are on cattle units.

The disease is most prevalent in areas closest to continental Europe which supports the theory that it was spread by infected midges during the summer of 2011.
