Good progress at Lodge Farm

Caley Sackur is making good progress between the showers at Lodge Farm, Tibthorpe, Yorkshire, and is a third of the way through his wheat.

“We are a bit stop-start but we’ve got a lovely morning today (18 August) so I’m heading out to the field now,” he said.

“We’re getting on really well and the yields are pretty reasonable, too.”

Cassata winter barley had yielded 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) and was excellent quality. “We’re very pleased with that.”

Excalibur oilseed rape ranged from below 4t/ha (1.6t/acre) to over 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), averaging 4.3-4.4t/ha (1.75-1.8t/acre).

“It was very variable, depending on the soil type.”

Mr Sackur had been into wheat for about a week, on and off, with Cordiale second wheat coming in at 7.4-11.1t/ha (3-4.5t/acre) and averaging 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre).

“That’s about 0.6t/ha (0.25t/acre) below average, and the range was more down to soil type than anything else.”

Gallant first wheat was doing well, at 9.9-10.5t/ha (4-4.25t/acre). “It looks superb. The major problem is that a lot of the wheat has been cut at 18-19% moisture so we’re having to dry it.”

Mr Sackur now had 61ha (150 acres) of Gallant and 80ha (200 acres) of Scout to finish off. “I don’t think the weather has affected the quality yet – it is still a good colour.”
