80% through near St Asaph

Contractor Glynn Jones is about 80% through harvest near St Asaph, North Wales, and yields have been generally pleasing.

“I’m trying to cut some peas today (2 September) and they are as flat as a pancake. They’re doing about 2.5t/ha (1t/acre) – and are full of wild oats which have taken them down.”

Battalion, Viscount and Humber winter wheat had yielded well, at about 10t/ha (4t/acre), he said. “It’s not as good as last year.

“I haven’t seen any sprouting, but some of the grains haven’t filled out on the lighter land because of the dry spring.”

Oilseed rape had done well, at 3.7-5t/ha (1.5-2t/acre), and Suzuka winter barley had topped 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

“The spring barley isn’t doing too badly, at 6.2-7.4t/ha (2.5-3t/acre).”

Mr Jones and his father had about 100ha (250 acres) left to finish off.

“We’ve got two combines so can do 24-28ha (60-70 acres) a day – if the weather stays fine we will be finished by next Wednesday.”
