Pleased with wheat near Thetford

Wheat yields have been very pleasing at High House Farm, Thetford, Norfolk, where Nick Doig hopes to be combining again this evening (11 August).

“The Scout did very well, with high bushelweights and good quality, on some quite strong land,” he said.

Claire performed well after linseed, but was a bit disappointing after winter oats, while Diego, after sugar beet on a neighbouring farm, excelled at 11.1t/ha (4.5t/acre).

“Our average is usually about 7.9t/ha (3.2t/acre), so for a year like this, that’s excellent.

“We’ve also been lucky this year, because all our wheat is on the good strong land.”

Mr Doig hoped his Pearl winter barley would make malting at 1.85% nitrogen, but said Castille rapeseed was extremely disappointing on light land, averaging just 1.5t/ha (0.6t/acre).

Crop: Oilseed rape
Variety: Castille
