Alan helps neighbours in Lincs
Having finished his own harvest a fortnight ago, Alan Hind was now helping out neighbouring farmers who still had 1000s of acres to combine.
“We had a brilliant harvest – the best we’ve had,” said Mr Hind from Elm Tree Farm, near Grantham, Lincs.
Wheat averaged about 10.4t/ha (4.2t/acre), with most coming in at below 18% moisture.
“We worked through the night and got it off the ground – we cut more wheat in the dark than in the daylight and we are absolutely tired out,” he said.
The last of the wheat – Nijinsky – suffered with low bushelweights and pink grains, so Mr Hind was drilling all Zebedee this year as it had performed so well.
Some large farms in the area still had 1000s of acres to cut, so Mr Hind was planning to harvest more wheat tomorrow (September 16).
“It’s getting a bit storm-broken now and has gone down in places. But thank goodness for a few dry days.”
