At a standstill in Yorkshire
Derek Lamplough was halfway through his wheat at Manor Farm, Scarborough, Yorkshire, and had not cut anything for over a week.
“There is a lot to do in the area, and quality will be going downhill every day,” he said. “It all wants doing now, but the forecast isn’t good.”
Mr Lamplough’s Tipple spring barley had yielded well at 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and was all malting quality.
The Zebedee winter wheat had yielded above average at 10t/ha (4t/acre), leaving the later-drilled Robigus to do.
Up on the Wolds Mr Lamplough wasn’t having problems travelling on the land, but farmers on the lower, heavier land were struggling with combines sinking into fields.
“That is a real problem for them,” he said.
