Barley and rape fare well

“All the winter barley (varieties Sequel and Pict) was done in July, yielding a good 9t/ha (3.6t/acre).” Bushel weights ranged between 67-70kg/hl, at an average moisture content of 15%.

The oilseed rape is now complete with yields averaging 3.7-4.4t/ha (1.5-1.8t/acre), which Mr Anderson described as fantastic. “They are almost as good as the record yields we managed last year.”

However, he estimates that 5-15% of the crop had suffered from sprouting, due to moisture contents ranging between 7.7 to 17.3%.

A start has been made on the 230ha of winter wheat harvest today (Aug 26), with the first loads coming in at 27% moisture.

Around 10% of the wheat has gone flat he believes, with some now starting to grow in the heads. He is now keen to get the remaining crops into the barn as quickly as he can.

“If it goes into the combine, we‘ll get it,” he remarked. Mr Anderson is using a new Claas Lexion 580 terra track, which he described as “ideal” for dealing with the wet ground conditions this harvest.
