Barley harvest underway near Kelso

Stuart Fuller-Shapcott has been flat out spraying crops off with glyphosate at Sweethope, Kelso, in the Scottish Borders.

“We’ve got plenty to do – we’ve taken on more contracting ground here and we’re frantically busy,” he said.

However, the combine had put in its first appearance. “We went twice round the headland in the winter barley yesterday (17 July),” said Mr Fuller-Shapcott.

“It looks pretty good, although only time will tell.”

Very little had been harvested in the area, although a few people had made a start combining winter barley this week, he added.

“Some of the wheat has got a lot of disease in it, but apart from that everything looks well.”
