Barley underway in Norfolk

Harvest got underway yesterday (18 July) at Nick Abram’s High House Farm, Beetley, Norfolk.

Yields so far had been surprisingly reasonable, given the lack of rain for so many months, he said.

The 14ha (35 acres) of Flagon winter barley cut yesterday yielded a good 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), with a nice bold sample, while the Retriever barley underway today seemed slightly heavier again.

“I think our winter barley and oilseed rape will be alright – but spring barley I am more than a little concerned about. The wheat is going off very quickly as well.”

Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Flagon
Area: 14ha (35 acres)
Yield: 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre)
