Best for 20 years at Acton House

John Best has enjoyed a fantastic harvest at Acton House Farm, Poyntzpass, Co. Armagh.
“It’s going very well – it’s been as good a harvest as we’ve had in 20 years. We’ve had great growing conditions and we should finish tomorrow, which is well ahead of normal.
“Yields have been good across the board – we’re very pleased.”
Winter wheat was pushing 10t/ha (4t/acre), and Flash oilseed rape had averaged 4t/ha (1.6t/acre) sold.
Winter oats were slightly below average, at 6.9t/ha (2.8t/acre).
“Most people will finish wheat by the end of the week – but spring barley has been slow to ripen.”
After the wheat Mr Best just had beans to cut. “They are still green – they’re just dying off now.”
