Clive Apps expected to continue combining oilseed rape at Boxted Lodge Farm, Romney, Kent, today (23 July), despite some early showers.
“The forecast isn’t great so we want to get on,” he said. So far he had cut about 80ha (200 acres) of Castille, Cabernet and Komando, at an average of 12% moisture.
“Generally, the yields seem reasonable – it’s probably doing 30cwt (3.7t/ha) through the combine.
“That’s better than we’ve had for several years – but it needs to be with the high input costs and low prices.”
Mr Apps had 16ha (40 acres) of rape left to cut, and expected to be into the wheat at the end of next week.
“I think the wheat is going to be drought stressed – on the lighter land it is going to have suffered.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
