Brompton yields well in Yorkshire
Yorkshire farmer David Hinchcliffe from Bank House Farm said rain has stopped harvest with 90ha of wheat left to cut. But he is ahead of last year, having had 200ha of wheat still to be cut this time last year after 200mm of rain.
Twenty hectares of first wheat Brompton has performed best at 12t/ha with good bushel weight.
Cordiale, Access, Welford and Robigus are averaging 10t/ha, with first wheats doing 11t/ha, and second wheats 8.5 – 9t/ha. Yields and bushel weights are much better than last year, he said.
His only concern is that he has to dry much of the crop, and was cutting at 21% yesterday to get the crop in. “The price of diesel makes drying prohibited for feed wheat.”
All of his remaining wheat will go for feed, so he is not too worried about the impact of rain on quality. But, for those with milling wheat remaining, he fears Hagbergs will be affected.
