Bumper wheat at Monmouth Farm

Diego winter wheat has exceeded expectations at GH Hoyles’ Monmouth Farm, Long Sutton, Lincolnshire.

The 40ha (100 acres) cut so far had averaged 12.3t/ha (5t/acre), with lots of straw and good quality seed, said David Hoyles.

“It’s been a bit of an intermittent harvest because of the showers, so we’ve only had a couple of days in wheat.”

Duxford second wheat yielded 8.54t/ha (3.5t/acre), having looked a bit thin all season, he added.

That left 60ha (150 acres) of mustard to combine for Colemans, and 150ha (370 acres) of Oakley wheat to cut.

“The Oakley looks good, but what we haven’t done after this week will have to go through the drier so that we can get on.

“We had more than 20mm of rain on Friday and Saturday (14/15 August) and the heads are turning black.”

Having carried out mycotoxin risk assessments before and after the rain, the score had increased from four (low risk) to 10 (medium risk), he said.
