Busy combining at Kelso

John Jeffrey is busy combining winter wheat at Kersknowe Farm, Kelso, and is extremely pleased with yields so far.

“Thankfully we’re into a good spell of weather – it’s bizarre how localised the showers have been,” he said.

“One farm five miles away has finished harvest, and got it all below 18% moisture, but here I’m struggling to get anything below 18%.”

However, with a few days of better weather, Mr Jeffrey was managing to cut Diego winter wheat at 18% moisture, and expected to move into Robigus shortly.

“One field of wheat went flat, so it was a nightmare to combine, but we’re cracking on well now. And yields are good for us on lightish land, at 8-8.6t/ha.”

Mr Jeffrey had sown all his oilseed rape, and hoped to finish the bulk of harvest by the end of the week, in line with many other farmers in the area.

“I don’t expect the wheat to make any milling grade, but if we finish as expected it will probably be our earliest ever harvest. It’s just a shame about the prices.”
