Busy with fieldwork near Ipswich

Andrew Baker is busy preparing for next year’s harvest at Foxes Farm, Creeting St Mary, Ipswich, Suffolk, after a very good year.

The 150ha of winter wheat yielded 10t/ha across Horatio, Solo, JB Diego and Cordiale.

“It’s the best wheat crop we’ve had in a long while, coming off at around 12-14% moisture,” Mr Baker said.

“The sample was very good and we’ve only had to cold dry about 60 tonnes.”

The 50ha of oilseed rape was also very pleasing. DK Cabernet yielded 4.76t/ha, while Alienor yielded 4.5t/ha.

“We’re very happy with yields as it was grown on very light land.”

With Cabernet and Charger oilseed rape in the ground for next year, Mr Baker was making most of the dry weather and the promising forecast.

“It’s non-stop ploughing, spreading and keeping busy while the weather’s good so that we can get everything right for next year.”
