Carl cracks on in Northumberland
Carl Tuer has nearly finished combining wheat at Rock Farms, Alnwick, Northumberland, leaving 200ha (500 acres) of spring barley and oats to cut.
“Wheat quality still seems reasonable – it’s absolutely amazing, the amount of sprouting we’ve got is minimal.”
Bushelweights seemed good and yields were excellent at about 10.9t/ha (4.4t.acre), said Mr Tuer.
With the aid of a second combine he had just made a start on the spring barley, and hoped to be on again later today (24 September).
The barley looked reasonable, but the oats had been laid for a long time, so would be difficult to cut.
“Most farms have got 20-30% left to do – they’re getting there,” he said.
