Cereals 2014: Arable farmers encouraged to talk about costs
Arable farmers are being encouraged to talk to other growers more about costs, following the example of dairy farmers who are members of discussion groups.
HGCA’s Crop Bench tool has had a facelift and the levy board is offering to help discussion groups make use of it, mirroring the successful approach in the dairy sector.
“The tool (Crop Bench+), which was previously available on a CD, is now web-based and can be accessed via our website,” said Derek Carlass, HGCA lead regional officer at the Cereals Event.
“All levy payers can use it. They can simply log on and enter their details.”
In addition, if a group of farmers wish to get together, HGCA’s team of regional officers will help facilitate the group, enter data for them and look after the group.
Mr Carlass pointed to the successful approach in the dairy sector where groups of dairy farmer meet regularly and compare their costs.
“It’s about getting farmers to talk to each other about their costs.”Farmers interested in should contact their regional officer, details are available on the HGCA website http://www.hgca.com/.
