Curry praises the government for announcing a biofuels obligation

Government adviser Donald Curry has welcomed the government’s adoption of a Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation because it is a move which should boost the UK biofuel sector.

Transport secretary Alistair Darling made the announcement on Thursday (Nov 10) in Birmingham.

It means there will be a requirement for 5% of all UK fuel sold on UK forecourts to come from a renewable source by 2010.

Sir Donald said: “This is very welcome news. We have been hoping for some time for a positive move from the government on this issue.

“This announcement will give encouragement to the many producers who are seriously interested in the commercial opportunities which biofuels represent.

“We now need to see positive signals encouraging investment in processing and infrastructure to allow UK producers to contribute to reaching this target.

“It would be a very great pity if we missed this opportunity, allowing this market to be supplied from abroad when we have the potential to satisfy the demand for biofuels from within the UK.”
