Dry weather allows harvest progress
“Today (Aug 31) was the first day we‘ve harvested and not had to dry the corn.”
He was harvesting this morning (Aug 31) at 15% moisture and is glad the drier has a chance to clear some of the backlog.
“We‘re doing well, but I‘d be happy if we could get it in the shed.”
Mr Bawn grows Nijinsky Claire and Robigus for a feed mill, which processes it into chicken feed. He also grows Einstein for milling and has so far been impressed by the yields of all varieties.
“Yields have been exceptional and the Einstein has made the milling grade – it‘s the year for wheat although the harvesting could have been a bit easier.”
So far, 400 out of a total 700 acres (280ha) has been harvested.
“We‘re trying to do 20ha (50 acres) a day, so we‘ve only got another 6 days of harvesting still to do.”
Mr Bawn believes there should not be any problems establishing his oilseed rape this year.
“I don‘t see us having any problems with moisture levels in the ground this year.”
