E-planting returns for spuds

Potato growers can now complete their planting returns online at the Potato Council website after a successful pilot version was tested last spring.
Once registered, growers click on the map and search for a field by inputting the map reference or FIS number or place name and complete the required information including field or farm name, number of hectares planted, as well as variety and market sector. The process is repeated for all plantings, before the information is submitted directly to the Potato Council.
Inga Martin, Potato Council personnel and legal director, says: “The site was created as a simple alternative to the traditional paper returns system and to help streamline the process for growers.
“It is incredibly easy to use but comes complete with an online user guide for first-time users and is supported by our technical team. The map data is validated instantly and there are prompts at each stage to ensure that no inaccurate or incomplete returns can be filed, saving a huge amount of time.
“Of course, growers can still print and keep hard copies for their records. They can also rest assured that the system is completely secure. A personalised password to enable them to access the site is posted to growers before they system goes live in 2009 and they use this and their levy-payer number to log on.
“As many growers who have piloted and used the site since its development can testify, it really is worth having a go.”
To use the e-planting returns programme a broadband internet connection is required. To register please contact the registration team on 01865 782 203 or by email.
