Early harvest for better prices

Mr Crow said he harvests early to try and get premiums offered by the early markets.

His 16ha (40 acres) of Paragon all made milling quality while the 85ha (210 acres) of Claire has all been sold for over £70/tonne.

“We tried to cash in on last years prices as we can‘t get high yields on our light sandy soils. We‘ve got to do something to make some money.”

But he was not pleased with yields which averaged 7.41 t/ha (3t/acre).

“We would be expecting to get at least half a tonne (per acre) more than that.”

The potato harvest is pushing everything back on Mr Crow‘s farm.

“Normally we would have had the wheat drilled by now, but we‘ll start next week when we finish the 20 acres (8 ha) of spuds we‘ve got left.”
