Easy harvest for Warwickshire farmer
Warwickshire grower Roger Mann said he had never known harvest to have been so easy. “All the crops came in dry. The early crops were too hot so we had to cool them in July but we went through so easily in August.”
Winter wheat averaged 8.1t/ha (3.25t/ac) from 128ha (320ac) of Einsteinm Istabraq, Malacca, and small amounts of Alchemy, Gladiator and Cordiale. He said Alchemy and Cordiale had done particularly well at 8.75-9.4t/ha (3.5-3.75t/ac).
“The average was not the best due to the drought, but we’re pleased it all came in dry. We expect the quality to be good as it was cut before the rain and so it kept its colour.”
He planned to grow Alchemy, Einstein and Cordiale next year.
Mr Mann finished harvest on Aug 15 this year. “We usually start Aug 10 and finish at the end of the month, which is why I’ve taken a few days holiday now!”
He said beans had been disappointing at 2.5t/ha (1t/ac), oilseed rape had been sold and came in at 3.75t/ha (1.5t/ac), and oats at 5.9-7.5t/ha (2.3-3t/ac).
His only problem had been a combine breakdown but a friend helped out to get it fixed.
“So, overall it was very easy because all the crops came in fine and they all came in dry.”
