Essex farmer escapes the rain
Tim Cooper has harvested 70ha of Malacca wheat on his farm near Wix, Essex with so far pleasing results.
“We‘re quite lucky on this farm. We seemed to miss out on most of the rain,” he said.
“Apart from some hot spots on light land the harvest has overall not been too bad.”
Hagbergs have been around 300 and proteins 14%, while moisture contents are variable but averaged around 16%.
“Give the wheat another week and then the Hagbergs will start dropping.”
Although the quality of his crop is good, Mr Cooper described the crop as “worthless” because prices are so low.
“It‘s the cheapest price for high quality milling wheat I‘ve seen in my life, bearing in mind that I‘ve been doing this since the 1980‘s.”
