Excellent yields in Staffordshire

John Wilcox has cut nothing for over a week at Batch Acre Hall, Stratford, Staffs, but yields so far have been excellent.

“We’re very pleased with the wheat, winter barley and the spring barley,” he said.

Zebedee winter wheat had yielded 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) on light land, with Saffron winter barley and Westminster spring barley both averaging about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

The Westminster had made a malting specification, and all straw yields had been good, he added.

“We had a very heavy hailstorm a week prior to combining the wheat, and the Zebedee lost about two cwt through shedding,” said Mr Wilcox. “The Alchemy in the next field was fine.”

He had sold some of the wheat this week (21 August) into the premium spot market at £120/t ex-farm.

He was now trying to buy a second hand combine to help finish off the 40ha (100 acres) of spring barley and 243ha (600 acres) of Alchemy, Nijinsky, Sahara and Oakley wheat still to do.

“At the moment it’s alright, but if we get another week of this weather it will really start to suffer.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
