Flexible key to blackgrass control

ADJUSTING HERBICIDE programmes to overcome problems caused by the late harvest and wet autumn can still provide effective blackgrass control, growers have been told.

“Farmers should not be too concerned if their blackgrass plans are in disarray this autumn,” said Bayer CropScience‘s Tim Holt.

More flexible products can help farmers adjust their herbicide programme to suit the conditions, he said.

“The main problem… has been the wet weather and wet soil which has meant farmers have been unable to get on with the sprayer in such small windows of opportunity.”

He recommended growers use Liberator (flufenacet + diflufenican), which can be used pre- or early post-emergence on blackgrass up to the end of December or the one leaf stage.

Where blackgrass was at the 2-3 leaf stage, he suggested growers use a Liberator + Atlantis (mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium) mix.
