Four days work left for winter wheat in Norfolk

Jason Armsby is waiting to finish off 200 ha (500 acres) of Alchemy, Gladiator and Soissons winter wheat, around Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

He reckoned it would take four days work given good weather.

Although rain arrived today, he said harvesting had gone well and was ahead of last year.

The 400 ha (1000 acres) of wheat already cut yielded 7-10t/ha. Alchemy appeared to have done well, but lighter land Soissons had struggled.

Mr Armsby had finished oilseed rape.

His 20ha (50acres) of NK Grace yielded 2.8 t/ha (1.12t/acre) and 50ha (125 acres) of NK Bravour 3.2 t/ha (1.28t/acre). Yields were down from a farm average of 4t/ha.

He had also cut 70ha (175 acres) of Pearl winter barley, which had yielded 5t/ha (2t/acre) compared to an average of 6.25 t/ha (2.5t/acre). Nitrogen levels were 1.6-1.8%.

“With the drought in the spring and the wet in the summer it’s just one of those years,” he said.

Spring barley was also completed with 60ha (150 acres) of Cocktail yielding 5 t/ha (2t/acre) with 12% screenings and 10ha (25 acres) of Tipple yielding 6t/ha with 6% screenings. The sample produced 1.7% nitrogen.
