Full steam ahead
“Over the last week (w/e Sept 3) a lot of stuff has been chewed through.”
“We are now well into harvest and by the end of next week I should think we‘ll be well through harvest. However there is still a lot to be done in the north-east and north-west corners of the country.”
Nearly all of the spring barley has been cut with most described as being “pleasantly usable”, as much of it made malting status.
At a guess 15-20% of the wheat has been cut, said Mr Harriman.
Yields for wheat have so far been promising and bushel weights have held up, but in southern Scotland hagbergs have disappeared.
“Even with some of these results we should not minimise the problems farmers have faced this year. Growers will be happy to see the end of this harvest.”
Mr Harriman predicts expenditure for many farmers will be very high this year because of wet crops and the very high prices for diesel.
