Gerald disappointed with barley

Gerald Erwin was cutting spring barley at Nutts Corner, Crumlin, Co Antrim, today (26 September) and was disappointed with yields.

“It’s badly weathered and is averaging 3.7-4.9 (1.5-2t/acre) – we would normally do 5-6t/ha (2-2.5t/acre).”

The Waggon was performing better than the Westminster, he said.

He still had 12ha (30 acres) of spring barley to cut, as well as 40ha (100 acres) of wheat.

“Our wheat yields are now dropping to about 6-7.4t/ha (2.5-3t/acre), down from 7.4-8.6t/ha (3-3.5t/acre) earlier, but the sample has improved a wee bit as moistures have dropped.”

Ground conditions were almost back to normal, and farmers still had about 10% of harvest to finish off in the area.

“We’ve got nothing back in the ground again,” said Mr Erwin. He hoped to start sowing winter barley early next week.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
