Great barley harvest two years running
“I‘m extremely happy” he said.
He‘s getting 9.4 t/ha (3.8 t/acre) on his Pict barley while Sequel is just yielding less at 8.9 t/ha (3.6 t/acre).
“It‘s been a big one again; it‘s on par with last year which was also a great harvest.”
Mr Anderson said yields are normally around about 7.9 t/ha (3.2 t/acre).
The crop has on average a 14% moisture content and specific weights are between 68 -70 kg/hl.
“Everything is getting baled and shifted quickly – it’s working well.”
Mr Anderson has harvested 125ha (310 acres) so far and hopes finish the 10ha (40 acres) that is left before the rain.
“Sods law will be that I’ll have 20 acres (8 ha) left and then it will start raining.”
However, low prices are offsetting the benefits that are being made from higher yields.
“At least because the prices are so low I don’t need to change my cash flow in the books.”
Mr Anderson said “the oilseed rape and wheat is still hanging on because of the miserable weather”.
He said his oilseed rape is very variable.
“It‘s hard just trying to take an average.”
Mr Anderson is trying to remain confident about his wheat harvest as well.
“I hope that my wheat will do as well as my barley did,” he said.
