Harvest ground to a halt earlier this week (w/e August 31) at Edintore, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, as the wheat simply wasn’t ripe.

“We’re having a big problems with green straw despite applying glyphosate,” said Jim Macfarlane. He had cut just 20ha (50 acres) of Robigus, and yields were 1.2-1.9t/ha (0.5-0.75t/acre) down on average.

The 24ha (60 acres) of Saffron winter barley appeared to yield well but bushel weights were low at just 60-61kg/hl. The 40ha (100 acres) of Oxbridge spring barley was pleasing at almost 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) but Mr Macfarlane had not seen a sample result yet.

The Lioness oilseed rape averaged a “fantastic” 4.6t/ha (1.85t/acre).

Mr Macfarlane now had 61ha (150 acres) of Robigus, Alchemy, Zebedee and Consort wheat to cut, as well as some Fuego spring beans for seed. “They are still green so I guess it will be October before I cut them.

”We just need a bit of patience – traditionally wheat harvest in this area is a September job – we’ve just been spoilt with a few early years.”
