Grower makes most of dry spell

Tim Cooper has made a start on his Malacca wheat combining 20ha (50 acres) this week on his farm near Wix, Essex.

The weathers been “bright and dry”, allowing him to make some needed progress.

Yields are around 8.65 t/ha (3.5 t/acre) and moisture content 15% which “was anticipated”.

“There have been a few good areas but yield hasn‘t been fantastic,” Mr Cooper said.

This year‘s harvest is roughly a week later than normal on the light sandy soil, due to the lack of sunshine.

Mr Cooper has further 100ha (250 acres) still to combine and hopes the weather stays on his side in order to make as much progress as possible.
