Harvest 09: 40% cut in Aberdeen

Harvest is about 40% through in Aberdeenshire, and just a few days behind normal, according to Doug Fowlie of Millhill Farm, Longside, Peterhead.

He had cut half of his spring barley, but was yet to make a start on the winter wheat or oats.

“The spring barley is yielding well and is nice quality grain, but the premiums are no good at all.”

The Optic, Oxbridge and Scout had averaged about 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) at 1.5% nitrogen, he said.

Pastoral winter barley yielded 8.7t/ha (3.5t/acre) at 18% moisture, while Mendel oilseed rape came in dry at 10%, but yielded a disappointing at 3.6t/ha (1.5t/acre).

Although the weather had been kind in August, the past 10 days had proved frustrating, said Mr Fowlie.

After the spring barley he had 89ha (220 acres) of Robigus winter wheat and 40ha (100 acres) of Firth spring oats to cut.
