Harvest 09: 80% through in Kent

Clive Apps was contract combining spring barley near Boxted Lodge Farm, Romney, Kent, today (13 August).

“It seems a bit disappointing,” he said.

But winter wheat had been pleasing, with 243ha (600 acres) of Cordiale, Viscount and Claire averaging a good 9.9t/ha (4t/acre).

“Some second wheats on light land have suffered, but generally yields have been quite good.”

However, the prices were a major disappointment. “They’re below the cost of production.”

A couple more days in the wheat would finish it up, and most people in the area were about 80% through harvest, said Mr Apps.

“We have been lucky on the whole.” That left some linseed to do in a couple of weeks time, after being sprayed off today or tomorrow.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
