Harvest 09: Almost done in Rhyl
Huw Jones has almost finished harvest at Pengwern Farm, Rhyl, Wales, with just 6ha (15 acres) of Duxford winter wheat to cut.
Drilled at the end of December, the wheat was still about 10 days away from ripening, he said.
All the rest of the wheat had come in at about 15% moisture, with the Oakley and Humber yielding a pleasing 9.9-11.1t/ha (4-4.5t/acre).
Most farmers in the area were close to finishing up, he added.
Crop: Winter wheat
Varieties: Oakley and Humber
Area: 24ha (60 acres)
Yield: 9.9-11.1t/ha (4-4.5t/acre)
Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
