Harvest 09: Awash in Scotland
South West Scotland has received six inches of rain over the past week, leaving combines awash in fields of barley.
“If this weather continues we will be in deep trouble,” said Richard Bray, an agronomist with Agrovista UK. “It’s turning out the way it did last year.
Some crops of spring barley in Dumfriesshire, which went flat during thunderstorms in June, were now starting to grow out, while others were simply collapsing under the rain.
However, most spring barley in the area was only just fit, with the early variety Riviera now ripe and ready to cut, said Mr Bray.
“And winter wheat, while very black, is not sprouting as yet.”
Harvest was no more than halfway through in the region, he added.
Winter barley, which was all finished, did remarkably well, considering the wet autumn, with many crops averaging about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).
