Harvest 09: Blazing through in E.Anglia
Farmers have blazed through harvest in East Anglia over the past week, and are likely to be almost finished by the weekend, says Fengrain’s John Whitelam.
“What a difference a week makes. The crops are drier – they’re now below 15% moisture, so they’re easier to combine.”
The store was now about three-quarters full, against just a quarter one week ago.
Wheat quality was encouraging, with Solstice at 13% protein, Cordiale at 12.5% and Einstein at about 12%. “It’s all very usable.”
Spring barley was now coming off thick and fast, averaging 1.6-1.7% nitrogen with a nice sample, said Mr Whitelam.
Peas had also been pleasing, at about 5t/ha (2t/acre), he added.
Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
