Harvest 09: Busy in Inverness

Harvest is back underway at Jim Whiteford’s Shandwick Mains, Tain, Inverness, after a week without combining due to heavy rain.

“Harvest resumed on Wednesday (9 September) with vengeance. The high pressure sitting on us promises us days of good weather, which are much needed,” he said.

Today (11 September), Mr Whiteford was combining Istabraq and Riband winter wheat, which was yielding 9.5t/ha (3.84/acre) so far.

That left 16ha (40 acres) to finish off. “Quality is good, although there is slight discolouring.”

The Waggon spring barley averaged 7t/ha (2.85t/acre), and came in at moistures as low as 15%, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
