Harvest 09: Combining in Powys

David Price was busy combining winter barley at Presteigne, Powys, today (6 August), but conditions were extremely wet.

“We’re sodden up here – it’s almost as bad as last year,” he said.

However, the crops still looked good, and the 9ha (23 acres) of Saffron had yielded 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) so far, coming off at 18% moisture.

Mr Price hoped to finish the remaining 4ha (10 acres) of barley and make a start on his 20ha (50 acres) of Castille oilseed rape tomorrow.

“It’s been a fantastic crop all year, but I don’t normally spray it off and I hope I’ve made the right decision to spray it this year.”

He wouldn’t expect to start winter wheat until about 25 August, so there was plenty of time for the wheat and oats to ripen, he said.

Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Saffron
Area: 9ha (23 acres)
Yield: 7.4t/ha (3t/acre)
