Harvest 09: Combining near Kelso

Neil Thomson was combining winter barley near Kelso, Scotland, today (30 July), and hoped to make decent progress over the next 24 hours.

Although he had tried to start harvest at Caverton Mill on 13 July, a deluge of 2” of rain in just two hours, followed by another 2.4” a few days later, had prevented any further combining since then.

“The barley is all still standing, which is remarkable, and travelling is alright.”

The 8ha (20 acres) of Pearl cut on a neighbouring farm today had yielded a disappointing 6.5-7t/ha (2.6-2.8t/acre) at 18.5-20% moisture, said Mr Thomson.

Having sprayed off his rape yesterday, he expected to be into that in about two weeks time – not unusual for the area.

Next on the agenda would be very early desiccated peas, which would be ready in about a week.

Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Pearl
Area: 8ha (20 acres)
Yield: 6.5-7t/ha (2.6-2.8t/acre)

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
