Harvest 09: Cutting wheat in Kent
Jonathan Tipples was enjoying a fine day in Kent today, and making a start on his wheat at Reed Court Farm, Marden.
Having cut just 10ha (25 acres) of Einstein as a second wheat, at 16.1-18.7% moisture, he was disappointed with yields of about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).
“It’s not particularly good. We could have done with a lot more rain in June. There’s nothing more depressing than harvesting drought-ravaged crops in a monsoon!”
Mr Tipples had finished all bar eight pigeon-damaged hectares (20 acres) of oilseed rape, which would not be ready to cut for another week.
The 69ha (170 acres) of Castille had averaged about 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre), getting progressively worse as harvest progressed, he said.
Farmers were about 15-20% through harvest in the area, having almost finished winter barley and cut 70-80% of their rape, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
