Harvest 09: Finished at Battletown Fm

Mark McFerran finished harvest at Battletown Farm, Newtonards, Co Down, yesterday (6 August), after two weeks of combining winter barley.

“It has been very slow going,” he said. The 34ha (85 acres) of Volume had yielded 6.9t/ha (2.8t/acre) at 19.5% moisture, with everything cut at between 17% and 22% moisture.

“We were just glad to get it cut.” Some had been sprayed off for up to a month, so was too ripe by the time it was combined.

With heads on the ground, and over-ripe straw, both straw and grain yields were lower than expected, he said.

“But all in all, we’re pleased to have it finished.” Mr McFerran had no other cereals to combine, and had now managed to get all the straw baled and most of the fields cleared.

With very little winter barley in the area, most farmers were yet to even start harvest, although the spring barley looked extremely well, he added.
