Harvest 09: Finished wheat in Kent

John Beslee finished combining winter wheat at Hook Green Farm, Southfleet, Kent, yesterday (20 August), leaving just winter beans to cut.

Solstice wheat, drilled in September, yielded 8t/ha (3.25t/acre), while the October-drilled Cordiale performed better.

It averaged 9.3-9.9t/ha (3.75-4t/acre). Both produced good milling quality, said Mr Beslee.

He had also cut 73ha (180 acres) of Tipple spring barley, which proved extremely variable.

Yields ranged from 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) to 9.9t/ha (4t/acre), averaging over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which was very pleasing, he said.

That left 28ha (70 acres) of beans to finish up, which were not yet fit.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
